Tooth pain is one of the most debilitating types of pain. It is unrelenting and seems to pulse with every heartbeat, radiating discomfort throughout the body.
This pain often stems from untreated infections that can lead to dangerous complications and greater discomfort if left untreated. At Sioux City Family Dentistry, Dr. Nhu Le offers effective tooth pain treatment solutions, such as root canal therapy, to help bring immediate relief.
A root canal is designed to save an infected or damaged tooth by removing the inflamed soft tissue inside the tooth (known as pulp). Inside the pulp are blood vessels and nerves that, when infected, can cause excruciating pain and swelling.
If left untreated, the condition may lead to an “abscess,” a very painful pus-filled pocket of inflamed tissue caused by infections that can develop anywhere in the body.
Tooth pain is generally a clear sign that you may need a root canal, especially if the pain flares up whenever you eat or drink cold or hot foods. Other signs include tenderness or swelling around your gums, a lingering bad taste, and a dark discoloration on the tooth.
Consistent sensitivity and sharp pain while biting down are also indicators.
During the root canal, Dr. Le cleans out the infected pulp and then disinfects the affected area before filling it with a special material to prevent future infection.
Once the procedure is completed, the tooth is usually capped with a prosthetic restoration, such as a dental crown, to protect it and provide added strength. The crown is almost like a tooth-shaped armor suit protecting your weakened tooth.
While root canals have an intimidating reputation, the truth is that the procedure isn’t as terrible as it’s made to seem. Modern root canal procedures involve minimal discomfort thanks to advances in dental technology, including highly effective anesthetics.
The healing process following a root canal is often managed by over-the-counter pain medication, and the discomfort usually fades after a few days.
While we admit the healing process isn’t pleasant, we’re confident you’ll take that minor discomfort over a tooth infection any day of the week.Â
During the healing period, you should avoid chewing as much as possible. Soft foods are highly recommended. You should also avoid very cold or hot foods or drinks.Â
Rising your mouth with salt water, swishing, and spitting up to three times daily can also help reduce discomfort.Â
Most root canals take 30-60 minutes. However, depending on the circumstances, some more complex cases can take 90 minutes to 2 hours. A root canal usually takes one or two visits to complete.
